How to Avoid the mid-January Let Down
by Steve Slaunwhite

I call it the mid-January let down. It goes something like this:
On New Year’s Eve you set some exciting goals for your freelance business. You’re motivated. You can’t wait to get started. Then, after a couple of weeks – about mid-January – that initial exuberance wears off. You lose focus. You lose energy. And, before long, the commitment you made to your goals begins to fall by the wayside.
How do you prevent this from happening to you? Here are a few tips for staying on track:
>> Make your goals public
Let friends and colleagues know what you’re trying to achieve. Ask them to help hold your feet to the fire.
>> Write your goals down
Don’t just keep them in your head! Think of goals as a business plan you have to present to your banker. Get them down on paper. Make them real.
>> Review your goals regularly
Keep a copy of your goals in your wallet, purse, or briefcase. Consider them as important to have with you as your driver’s license. Then, at least once a week, review your goals.
>> Track your progress
Each week, review what you’ve done toward achieving your goals. Did you learn something new? Improve on a skill? Get a new client?
Tracking your progress will keep you motivated, and also help you identify other things you need to do to reach your objectives.
>> Celebrate the milestones
Each time you make a significant step toward achieving a goal – let’s say it’s improving your Web site or publishing a new article – give yourself a pat on the back. Buy yourself a nice gift. Or take yourself out for lunch. Or treat yourself to a spa getaway!
Celebrating a milestone keeps you motivated. And gives you the energy boost you need to make it to the NEXT milestone.
These tips may sound trite. But they work. So use them! Don’t let the mid-January let down get YOU down.
