When I wrote my how-to book on this business more than seven years ago, I started by saying that freelance copywriting can be a lot of things — fun, creative, challenging, lucrative, tough, intensive, stressful, rewarding — but the one thing it isn’t is boring.
Do I still feel the same way today? Absolutely.
I have been a full-time freelance copywriter for more than 15 years now. And, although there have been challenges, the rewards continue to be plentiful.
Today, I work in a comfortable home office writing for Hewlett-Packard, UPS, Rogers Publishing, Mitsubishi, USi Interworking, Symantec, Hoover’s Business Information and dozens of other great clients.
I also work with other freelance professionals, helping them to attract more clients and better paying projects through my handbooks, audio classes, courses, and coaching programs.
My work and expertise have been profiled in such publications as DM News, Inside Direct Mail, The Wall Street Journal, Marketing Magazine, Insurance Marketing, The Vancouver Sun, Sales & Marketing Journal, The Writer, White Paper Source and many others.
I’m the author of several copywriting and marketing-related books including Start & Run a Copywriting Business (Self-Counsel Press), The CMA Guide to Email Marketing (The CMA), Writing For The Business-to-Business Marketing (AWAI) and The Everything Guide to Writing Copy (Adams Media).
And, as if all that doesn’t keep me busy enough, I lead seminars on copywriting and successful freelancing at meetings and conferences throughout North America.
How did I get here? Through a lot of trial and error — the slow road to success that I hope this website will help you avoid. (There’s no honor in plodding along the tough path. The fast track is always the best track!)
